Higher Octane Gasoline Will Clean My Engine!! Don't Fall For That

  by Khalid R. Mustaffa

A number of us at cars in Houston were big believers in the fact that adding a tank of premium gasoline every now and then would clean out the system, as that it would burn at a higher temperature. Well, only until an argument happened over this matter, that lead cars in Houston to conduct a detailed research, one that involved consulting with the Federal Trade Commissions.

Hence, the research conducted by Cars in Houston is based on US rules and regulations, and necessarily applies to other countries around the world.  Without further to say, the research concluded, that using higher octane gas does not indeed clean your system, but actually cleans your wallet for no reason.

Cars in Houston found out that the US EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency) requires that every octane grade, of every single brand of gasoline (brand names, and gas stations around the corner) to contain cleaning additives.  The additives should by law protect against harmful build-up of engine deposit, and should eliminate the deposits for the expected life of your car.

Cars in Houston went further in the research to explain the science behind octane ratings.  Octane ratings, measures the gasoline's ability to resist engine knocks, rattling due to premature ignition of the fuel-air mixture in the cylinders. Bare in mind that occasional light knocking will not harm the engine, and not necessarily an indication that you need higher octane rating.

On the other hand, heavy, constant knocking and pining could lead to engine damage. If you experience heavy knocking, which is very rare in new cars, then increase the fuel grade, and if this doesn't instantly stop the knocking, consult with a mechanic as soon as possible.

This is only the first of a series of articles dedicated to educating the consumers on gas, and gas additives.  Hence, those that really protect your engine and others that hurt the engine.
