How Often Do I Change My Brakes? How Do I Know If I Need a Brake Job?

  by Khalid R. Mustaffa

The Braking system is very essential for car passengers safety. Hence, never fall for misleading advertisements with a a fixed price for brake jobs. This is a basic estimate, or a universal lowest price the brakes can be changed. To diagnose the brakes, you need to look for problems such as vibration, grabbing, and pulling. Furthermore, low or soft pedal, and abnormal noises. However, front pads handle a higher amount of the breaking load. So the general rule is that front brakes wear out faster the rear brakes.

Make sure you understand that there is no set mileage intervals that brakes should be replaced, or relined. This is due to the fact that wear on the brake pads depend on various factors, most importantly the braking habits of the driver. Moreover, braking systems are designed differently on each car.

I personally saw identical brake pads installed on 2 identical used cars in houston area. One lasted for 50,000 miles, and the other lasted 70,000. To further investigate, I interviewed the drivers of both cars in houston. The 70,000 was mostly highway driving, and the 40,000 was driven mostly in stop-and-go city traffic.
